A code that full is hard to scan, because it is made of thousands of tiny squares. For a code that people scan from a poster or a shelf, keep the text under about 300 characters. Long text makes a dense code with tiny squares that cameras struggle to read. Cut the text to a few lines, or print the code bigger. For a poster or a shelf label, stay under about 300 characters.
Text that starts with http or www, or looks like an email address or a phone number, is treated as a link, an address or a number. Rewrite it as plain words, for example “Serial number: SN-4821”, or use the code type made for that content.
Accents, emoji and non-Latin letters need more space, and some scanner apps show them as odd symbols. Test on the phones your audience uses, or write the key text in plain Latin letters.
Print it at least 2 x 2 cm (0.8 in), bigger when people scan from a distance. Use a dark code on a light background, keep a white border around it, and don’t stretch the image.
